Growing readers through book ownership and reading celebrations

Bluejays Read's signature program creates a literacy oasis in a book desert: During the summer, Bluejays Read reaches out to 4 rural communities (170 children and adults last summer) by giving away hundreds of books from a make-shift bookmobile. During the school year, Bluejays Read sponsors more book give-aways at Snook ISD sporting events, reaching an even wider audience. Elementary and middle school teachers are treated to a holiday "shopping spree" in which they pick special books to gift to each of their students, about 300 in all. Bluejays Read celebrates a love of reading through events such as Bluejays Read Day, where guest readers share their favorite books with classes, and March Madness Celebration, where students reap rewards after reaching reading goals.
