Acara Hospice Foundation

Who We Are:
Acara Hospice Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting hospice patients and their families throughout our community. Established in 2022, the Foundation works to ensure that people facing the end of life are treated with dignity, surrounded by comfort, and supported by a caring community.

How We Serve: 
We provide free hospice education, meet one-time needs for hospice patients and families, and grant patient wishes that create meaningful moments and lasting memories. Our largest initiative is raising funds to build a Community Hospice House—a peaceful, welcoming place for hospice patients who need a place to receive end-of-life care, regardless of which hospice provider they choose.

This is a community project in every sense—a house created to serve our neighbors from every walk of life when they need comfort and care at the end of life, when home is no longer an option. It is for the people who have built lives here, raised families here, worked here, served here, and helped make the Brazos Valley home—the teachers who taught us, nurses who cared for us, police officers who protected us, lunch ladies who knew our names, neighbors who looked out for us, and parents and grandparents who raised us. They planted seeds in this community. Now it’s our turn to provide the shade.

That spirit of community is already at work at Brightside Thrift. What began as a way to raise funds for the Hospice House has become a bright spot in Downtown Bryan, supported by more than 50 volunteers as well as countless donors and shoppers. Donated items are given a second life, and proceeds help fund the building and future sustainability of the Community Hospice House.

Why Do We Need a Hospice House?
Hospice care can come to you. But sometimes, there isn't an appropriate place for it to come to. Hospice is a philosophy of care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for people with a terminal illness. Many patients receive hospice care wherever they call home. But not every patient has a home—or a home environment—that can safely meet their needs at the end of life.

Some live alone. Others have family caregivers who are elderly, overwhelmed, or physically unable to provide around-the-clock support. A patient may be discharged from the hospital but have nowhere appropriate to go. Families can find themselves facing difficult decisions at an already difficult time.

Our community needs another option.  The community hospice house plans include 8 in-patient suites, each with a kitchenette and entrance from the bedroom to a private patio (with a door wide enough to allow for a bed to be rolled out). It will also include large common spaces found in a traditional home, such as a livingroom, kitchen, and dining room, to allow room for families to congregate and gather in a relaxing, home-like setting.
