The Bryan Rotary Club has been serving the Bryan/College Station community and beyond since it was chartered in 1921. We will soon celebrate a century of service! At heart, Bryan Rotary is a club of servant leaders who volunteer time and resources for the betterment of society.
Rotary International's primary philanthropy is to END POLIO for good and this is championed by our 1.2 million members worldwide. Rotarians adopt a "Service Above Self" philosophy and place high regard for our Four-Way test of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The polio eradication campaign needs your help to reach every child. Thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, YOUR CONTRIBUTION will be TRIPLED. Read more about PolioPlus: https://www.endpolio.org/the-plus-in-polioplus.
According to an article from October 2019 in "The Rotarian" magazine, "eighteen million people around the world who would have died or been paralyzed are alive and walking because of the polio eradication campaign. Health workers and volunteers supported by PolioPlus grants have built an infrastructure for delivering health care and collecting data that, in many parts of the world, didn't exist before. It's already being used to improve overall health care and to fight other diseases, proving that the legacy of PolioPlus is more than eradicating a deadly disease from the planet - it's also building a stronger health system that provides better access to lifesaving interventions for the world's most vulnerable children."
Polio
Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.
PolioPlus
For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Our PolioPlus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by VACCINATING CHILDREN on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building.
Rotary members have contributed $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $8 billion to the effort.
No child should have to suffer from this vaccine-preventable disease. Help us make an impact by DONATING TODAY!
In 2017, at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, Bill Gates thanked Rotary for being the catalyst and visionary partner for ending the paralyzing disease [polio] worldwide. "Rotary laid the foundation with its unwavering sense of purpose and its belief that anything is possible if you put your mind and body to it." "That is what is so exciting about Rotary's 30-year fight," Gates told the crowd. "You are not only eradicating one of the worst diseases in history. You are also helping the poorest countries provide citizens with better health and a better future".
