As I begin my 38th year as an educator, I often reflect on one question:

Why do I continue to teach?

My answer is simple: I believe every child deserves someone who sees their potential—even when they cannot see it in themselves.

My passion for helping children, especially those who struggle with reading, comes from my own experience.

As a child, I struggled with reading throughout my elementary school years. Reading did not come easily to me, and I often felt the frustration that comes with struggling to do something that seems easy for others. With the help of caring teachers and the strategies they taught me, I eventually learned to read.

Even today, I consider myself a slow reader, and I still struggle with spelling. But I love to read.

Why?

Because those teachers did more than teach me to read. They taught me to believe in myself.

They saw potential in me when I couldn't always see it. They encouraged me, supported me, and helped me understand that struggling did not mean I couldn't succeed.

Those teachers changed the course of my life—and they inspired me to become a teacher.

Today, I have the privilege of working at Renner Academy, the only specialized school in the Brazos Valley dedicated to children with dyslexia and other learning differences.

At Renner Academy, students receive individualized instruction, small class sizes, and a safe, supportive environment where they can learn without feeling defined by their struggles.

Our students are given the opportunity to discover something incredibly important:

“I CAN learn. I CAN succeed. I AM capable.”

For a child who has spent years feeling unsuccessful in school, that realization can be life-changing.
