Kari's Why

The two “kids” in this picture are my why.

In 2022, my daughter underwent lifesaving heart surgery. The medical team that cared for her was incredible, and I will always be grateful for their skill, compassion, and the future they helped make possible.

But getting to that surgery was a difficult, six-month journey.

During an already frightening time, we faced unanswered questions and gaps in communication between the teams involved in her care. We were trying to understand what came next and make sure everyone was working together, all while worrying about our daughter’s heart.

That experience taught me how much coordinated care matters. When your child’s health is at stake, you need someone who helps connect the pieces. Someone who follows through. Someone who understands that behind every referral, appointment, and unanswered question is a family waiting, worrying, and hoping.

Today, my daughter is thriving as a sophomore at Texas A&M. Her “little” brother, who clearly isn’t so little anymore, still gets to pick on her, challenge her, and love her. He gets to hug his sister, ask her for advice, and grow up alongside her.

Those everyday moments mean everything to me.

That is why HealthPoint’s mission is personal.

One of the things that drew me to HealthPoint was its Care Coordination team. Having experienced how hard it can be when communication breaks down, I deeply appreciate the people who help patients navigate their care.

This dedicated team helps connect patients, medical providers, and referral partners so care can move forward with greater communication and collaboration. Their work helps families find their way through a process that can feel confusing and overwhelming, especially when they are already worried about someone they love.

I know what that kind of support would have meant to our family. I want more families in our community to have it.

Through my work with the HealthPoint Foundation, I have the opportunity to help strengthen the care and support available to our families, neighbors, coworkers, and friends throughout the Greater Brazos Valley. The Foundation supports HealthPoint’s mission by helping expand access to compassionate, high-quality care and supporting the teams who make that care possible.
